One of the greatest things about The Yellow Jacket newspaper is the incredibly talented and hardworking staff, which includes senior Austin Wash.
Throughout his years at Randolph-Macon, Wash has participated in several organizations on campus. Previously, Wash served as the Sophomore Class Senator for SGA. In addition, he spent time his junior year working as the Poetry Editor for The Stylus. This year, he is President of Sigma Tau Delta.
Currently, Wash serves as Senior Politics/Opinions Editor. In this position, he is responsible for managing the Politics section. However, Wash also has contributed his own articles to this section for each published issue.
“My favorite part about working with the newspaper definitely has something to do with the material we get to work with,” Wash said. “I love being a part of the facilitating political discourse on the Randolph-Macon campus.”
With this position, Wash has found it rewarding to see the students’ reactions and opinions on political happenings throughout the R-MC campus and the country. Wash has seen this primarily happen through the published opinion pieces that have been written by students themselves.
“Active political discussion is the lifeblood of change and progress,” Wash said. “[Yet, it's] particularly in a political climate as volatile and crazy as that of 2015-2016.”
Although his reign as Senior Politics/Opinions Editor is coming to an end, Wash plans to continue the practice of writing and editing.
“I actually thoroughly enjoy editing and being a stickler for grammar,” Wash said. “That’s another large part of why I’ve chosen the extracurricular arrangements that I have.”
After he graduates, Wash has dreamt of potentially pursuing a career in managing a publishing or editing company.
“I also continue to toy with the idea of publishing things on my own,” Wash said. “Or, going on in graduate studies of either English or Philosophy.”
In the meantime, Wash will continue to finish up course work within his double major of English and Philosophy, alongside his minor in German. In addition, he will continue to serve as Editor for The Yellow Jacket newspaper for the remainder of his time at R-MC.
The Yellow Jacket wishes you the best of luck in your future endeavors, Austin!
