From new business ventures to fun activities, Ashland has been a hub of activity over the past few months, and as summer draws to an end, the community has seen additions and improvements all over town. As the months go by, Ashland will continue to see changes with at least two new businesses set to open and continuing construction underway.
Over the next few weeks, the Center of the Universe will welcome Sports Page Bar & Grill, as well as Sweet Frog. These two restaurants will accompany Sugar Fix Bakery, which opened in July. Whether Ashland residents want to watch a football game, or satisfy their sugar cravings, it seems the new shops will be sure to meet everyone’s needs.
Sports Page Bar and Grill was established in 2003 on Midlothian Turnpike. Over the next decade the bar expanded to include other locations in Mechanicsville and Henrico. Their newest addition to the family-owned, sports-centric restaurant chain, which focuses on beer and wings, is located on 504 Henry St. and plans to open in September.
While Randolph-Macon students are probably no strangers to Sweet Frog’s premium frozen yogurt, a location next to campus will allow for a new study break spot throughout the school year. While there is no set opening date, Sweet Frog says that they plan to open sometime in October and will be located on 210 England Street.
Previously this summer, England Street also became home to Sugar Fix Bakery, a cozy shop that specializes in cookie decorating. Most recently they have featured all of Ashland’s businesses on their cookies, as well as “back-to-college” themed treats.
These three new businesses are a wonderful addition to the multitude of shops and restaurants that the Center of the Universe already has to offer. In addition to these shops, construction has taken over the downtown streetscape, as the next phase of a major construction project continues. The construction project will include replacing existing sidewalk, curb, and gutter, upgrading the storm water system, installing new LED street lights and crosswalk lighting, and installing both permeable and decorative pavers.
Ashland encourages everyone to “Come See Our Mess” during the construction. Through September, submit a copy of your receipt of $10 or more at a participating Ashland retailer for a chance to win one of the weekly drawings for a $100 Ashland Gift Certificate. To enter, simply scan or take a photo of your receipt, and email it along with your contact information (name, phone number and email) to shopashlandva@ gmail.com. Hard copies will also be accepted at Town Hall during normal business hours.
The participating retailers include the following: The Giving Tree, Cross Brothers Grocery, Shear Power, Jezebel’s, Alvaro Coronado, Changing Reins, The Iron Horse, The Chiffarobe, Bell, Book & Candle, The Caboose Wine & Cheese, Tiny Tim’s Toys, Trackside Grille, Sugar Fix Bakery, The Home Energy Store, and Salon Valentino.
