The R-MC men’s golf team had a great start to their year in the fall season with a third place finish at the Tom Kinder Memorial Tournament at Lakeview Golf and Country Club in Harrisonburg, VA, and a second place finish in the home invite at the Ted Keller Memorial Tournament at Hanover Country Club in Ashland, VA.
With a successful fall season in the books, the team is looking to come out firing this spring. Senior captain Kyle Fuller stated that this upcoming season, the team “hopes to pick up some team victories in the spring and challenge for the ODAC title in April.”
Three senior captains, including Weston Burdon, Robert Bradshaw and Fuller, lead the team this year. When asked how the captains fulfill their roles, Fuller commended his fellow captains on their ability to all work together, but with different strengths.
“Wes pushes the team, Bobby has a more encouraging voice and I try to lead the team by example,” Fuller said. The team also hosts a roster of five freshmen, who Fuller said have really “stepped up and showed some serious game.”
Because of the hard work displayed by these freshmen, Fuller said he is very confident for the future of the team.
Even with a wide range of experience on the team, Fuller said the team is closer than ever and a strong team dynamic is constantly present. He also said he credits much of the team’s success in the fall to this team cohesion.
“One of the reasons our team has gotten off to such a good start this year is because of the great chemistry,” Fuller said. “It keeps everybody upbeat and positive, which just makes everything more fun.”
Despite an overall successful fall season, the team does have room for improvement looking to the spring season. Like every other spring sport at R-MC, the men’s golf team has not really been able to fully practice this season. Fuller said he would like to see the team be a little more confident and believe in themselves and their games.
The Yellow Jackets are starting out their spring season March 23-24 in Bermuda at the Bermuda Collegiate Invitational at Port Royal Golf Club and Tuckers Point Golf Club. Fuller stated that while “there will be a couple good teams in the field… it is definitely a tournament we are capable of winning.”
Fuller also said the team faces some tough competition this year in the ODACs, including Guilford College and Washington and Lee.
“These two teams are two of the better teams in the country,” Fuller said, “and they will definitely challenge us at our conference championship.”
Fuller said he is confident in his team though, stating he believes “in the hard work and talent of [his] team,” and that if they play their best, they, “are more than capable of bringing home the championship.”
Fuller stated that his team is a “really special group of guys; I consider all of them my best friends, and I couldn’t ask for a better team to compete with during the final year of my collegiate career. It has been a real blessing to get to know these guys better throughout the course of this year.”
