The baseball team has been leading their season undefeated sweeping St. Mary’s University in a series battle and also Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in a two game series.
Starting this season after being placed second in the ODAC preseason polls in January, the Yellow Jackets haven’t fallen short of anyone’s expectations.
Leading the season with a 5-0 streak, the Yellow Jackets have had some exciting games with some spectacular highlights, such as last year’s 2014 ODAC Rookie of the Year Nick Maiolo receiving ODAC Player of the Week honors after the Yellow Jackets victory against St. Mary’s.
In the opening game of the season, the Yellow Jackets played against St. Mary’s on Feb. 7 and 8 at Hugh Stephens Field at Estes Park.
At home, the baseball team was amped to start their season at home and the series could not have gone better for the them.
Outscoring the Seahawks 6 to 2 in the first game of the day, the Yellow Jackets were charged to go play the remaining two games of the series.
The Yellow Jackets charged the field ready to play the second game of the series.
After scoring four points in the third inning, six in the fourth inning and finally four points in the fifth, the Yellow Jackets tallied the score to 14-0.
There third game was played on the 8th and the Yellow Jackets remained focused, beating the Seahawks 12-8. The series highlights were senior Nate Meiners, junior Michael Kroll , junior Christian Sanderson, junior Bryan Miltenberger all scoring points for the Jackets in Game 1.
Junior Nick Maiolo was able to gain two points in the first game. The second game highlights were achieved by Maiolo going 4 for 4, Kroll having a pair of doubles, junior Michael Trentham gaining two hits and three RBI, and sophomore Jordan Schmeer going 2 for 2 with two walks and three runs.
Additionally, freshman Rick Spiers gained five hits, while senior Brandon Beiler threw two hitless innings.
Now after going undefeated in the first and second games, the Yellow Jackets stormed in the third game ready for St. Mary’s. For the majority of the game, the Jackets led with a 7-4 lead before two of St. Mary’s players were able to gather 4 points in the sixth and seventh, making the score 8-7 with a Seahawks lead.
The Yellow Jackets stepped up to the plate, literally and figuratively, and they were able to gain 5 more points in the the seventh inning to secure the win.
After adjusting to the weather conditions, the Jackets went head to head with the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Engineers on Feb. 14.
The baseball team defeated the Engineers 4-3.
The highlights of the first game were freshman Nestor Rentas, sophomores Blake Saathoff, Jordan Schmeer, and Stuart Brown, and junior Christian Sanderson all helping tie the game 3-3.
The win was finalized with sophomore Nic Phelps scoring the last point to end the game.
In the second game against the Engineers later that day, the Yellow Jackets continued their dominance against RPI.
Scoring two in the fifth inning, three in the sixth inning, and lastly two in the eighth inning, the Jackets beat the Engineers 8-2.
The third game in the series was cancelled due to the weather.
The season has been outstanding for the Yellow Jackets and they plan to continue their successful season as they will go head to head against Christopher Newport in Newport News, VA when the game is rescheduled due to weather.
